HB40T HB40T, the new carbide grade developed by Boehlerit, provides the perfect combination of toughness and wear-resistance that is needed in the roughing of titanium. Boehlerit is a pioneer in the development of carbide cutting materials and the new HB40T grade once again proves the company’s ex- pertise in this field. The development of new grades and other high-end solutions such as the new HB40T is possible because the cutting experts from Kapfenberg (Austria) entertain close relations with the steel industry and can draw on vast application know-how. The challenge in this particular case is the high strength of titanium that causes high temperature loads and extreme wear on the cutting edge. To meet this challenge, so- phisticated combinations of metallic carbides that actually unite opposing properties are required. The new carbide grade HB40T is the ideal combination of out-standing wear- resistance and the toughness that is required for such an application. Boehlerit offers the HB40T grade in the form of rods, i.e. blanks for the production of shank tools that are used for the roughing of titanium alloys. The new HB40T grade is ideal for tool applications in almost all areas of industry where titanium materials are used. Typical ap- plications include the machining of structural aircraft components, or aircraft engine components, medical engineering products or components for chemical plants and energy facili- ties. New carbide grade for shank tools used to machine titanium. The toughest and sharpest edges for turning sintered carbide. bDtBoehlerit has developed special carbide grades for chipless forming that ensure machining efficiency in both engineering and economic terms. Together with our customers, we defined the specifications to be met by the carbide quality with regard to strength, toughness and corrosion resistance and machinability. In sintered condition, carbides can be subjected to complex milling, erosion and laser operations. In order to make the machining of carbides more economical, Boehlerit tailored the micro-geometry of CVD diamond edges BDT to the turning of its sintered carbides (from the HB30F ultra-fine grain to GB32 medium and GB56 coarse grain). Machining times can be reduced by up to 70 % compared to grinding with this geometry and service lives of 1+ hour are also quite common. The ideal cutting values were adjusted to the various Boehlerit carbides in numerous laboratory and practical tests. The cutting values are available in the CVD diamond BDT brochure at www.boehlerit.com. Boehlerit now offers a full service package to go with the CVD diamond BDT cutting material: competent consulting about material properties, optimised practical value, technology data and tools for the machining of Boehlerit carbides. 018 BOEHLERIT MAGAZINE
