automated tool logistics With its automated tool logistics service, Boehlerit is reducing indirect tooling costs for its customers Procurement, inventory control, tool store management etc. are non-productive tasks that entail indirect costs in addition to the direct acquisition costs of machining tools. Boehlerit’s automated tool logistics service helps to cut back these costs significantly. The whole range of tools is available at all times, the stock of inventory is optimised and consumption is more transparent. Who hasn’t been confronted with this situation? The machining equipment is at a standstill because the right tool is not available, or the lack of the right tool causes delays in order processing. However, these worst-case scenarios are only the tip of the iceberg for all tooling costs that are caused by organisational factors. While it is difficult to put a precise value to it, tool logistics clearly accounts for a significant share of tool costs, especially in flexible manufacturing companies. Not least the many orders, order confirmations, invoices etc. to be drawn up every day require a lot of work and time. This is where the tool and cutting material experts of Boehlerit come in with their automated tool logistics system to bring down their customers’ indirect tooling costs. “Our tool crib system is a sort of consignment store, a tool store set up and managed by Boehlerit right on site, at the customer’s facility”, says Gerhard Melcher, Head of Marketing and the turning and milling segments of Boehlerit. These stores are automatic supply systems and are stocked with a range of tools aligned to all customer requirements. Defined safety stocks and automatic re-ordering ensure that all tools are available at all times. The tools are taken out via an integrated, user-friendly control system. The software ensures that only authorised persons have access to the tool needed. The Boehlerit automated tool logistics systems are a first step towards effective tool management where all the necessary tools are available 24/7 quickly and efficiently. Machine downtime or delays in order processing caused by a lack of available tools are thus a thing of the past. Administration is also made easier, as fewer individual orders are placed manually. This again means a significant reduction of the time and work invested in procurement. The ongoing inventory control guarantees optimum stock and little capital tie- up, and the integrated software automatically allocates costs whenever a tool is taken from the tool store. This increases transparency and cre- ates the basis for meaningful analyses. Boehlerit’s automated tool logistics is based on Achterberg’s tool vending machines. They are modular and can easily be individually designed, combined and extended. 014 BOEHLERIT MAGAZINE
